Mutual Friends Episode 5 : “The Amazing Race”

“Beauty fades. That’s why it’s so valuable.”
My best friend and fellow writer Thabo Seroke said this to me the other day and it struck me to my core.  Obvious at first and then suddenly so complicated, that simple sentence illuminates. And then just before I can embrace the purity of that logic another thought enters my head; “But that’s so unfair.” And the injustice is not in the inevitability of the ageing process, but the thought that one’s value as a human being rests in winning some cosmic genetic lottery. And what struck me most about that statement is how it unintentionally singles women out and puts the pressure on them.

Episode 4: “Shmalentine’s Day”

I was single throughout my entire varsity career.
#Truestory. Throughout my university years I would approach Valentine’s day with the feeling of being a stray dog in Noah’s ark. All around me I would see these smug couples cuddling, kissing and sharing romantic gifts with each other so expensive it made their tuition fees look like lunch money. It always boggled me that even in an institution that encouraged critical thinking that Valentine’s Day would still be sheepishly followed by the nation’s most promising young thinkers. But I guess even they had the same yearning that I had; the need to feel loved.

Why are we so mean on social networks?
I get it: we are the born-free generation and are fully entitled to exercise our parent’s hard-won constitutional rights, one of them being, freedom of speech and expression.  My very livelihood rests on this one right so I can never sit in judgement of how other young people choose to express themselves and their opinion, regardless of whether or not I agree with them. Furthermore, I believe that social media is a great space for this expression, in which young people can connect with each other and with the world at large. The internet then presents the opportunity to gain and share new knowledge and have a truly dynamic and enriching relationship with our generation.

Choosing your degree is not just a passive activity; it is you taking a wild guess as to where you think your greatest contribution to the word will be in.
